Dontari Poe started his career by entering the NFL Combine as a potential second rounder. He was selected to succeed veteran Kelly Gregg at the defensive tackle position in Kansas City’s 3-4 defense. He moved into the starting lineup after Toribio injured his ankle after spending the first three preseason games on the bench. During the 2013 season, after not recording a quarterback sack in his rookie season, he scored 3.5 sacks over the first two games of the 2013 NFL season. He was also selected to participate in the annual Pro Bowl after the 2013 season. He played all 16 games with 6 sacks and a pass defended on 46 tackles during the 2014 season. He was also selected to the Pro Bowl for a second year in a row.
Dontari Poe also became the heaviest player in NFL history to rush for a touchdown during the week 11 against the San Diego Chargers. He was only the sixth defensive lineman to rush for a touchdown. He made 39 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery in 15 games. He later signed a one year contract on 16 March 2017 with Atlanta Falcons. He made a bonus of $125,000 after passing his July 26 weigh-in. Dontari Poe again signed a three year contract on 15 March 2018 with the Caroline Panthers. He started all 16 games, recording a career low 17 tackles and one sack in his first season in Caroline. He also played 11 games before suffering a torn quad in the 12 in the 2019 season. Later, he signed a two year contract with the Dallas Cowboys on 9 April 2020. He was placed on the active list at the start of training camp on 28 July 2020. He was later moved back to the active roaster on 18 August 2020.
